Picture: Tony Gough

HOUSES were flooded and roofs destroyed in the Christmas Day storm that wreaked havoc across Melbourne.

Essendon’s State Emergency Service fielded 135 calls for help after hail and heavy rain swept across the state on Christmas Day.

Homes in Melbourne’s northern suburbs were among those hit the hardest.

Essendon unit controller Sandra Faoro said most of the calls involved hailstone damage to skylights or roofs and flooding.

Some residents also experienced collapsed ceilings and broken tiles because of the heavy downpour.

Two units were dispatched around Moonee Valley and the volunteers had attended all requests by last Wednesday night.

“We had quite a few people who gave up their Christmas night and the next day and day after (to volunteer),” Ms Faoro said.

Airport West was the hardest hit with 25 calls for assistance, followed by 23 calls each from Essendon, Strathmore and Niddrie.

Ms Faoro said it was important for people to check and clear their gutters and drains, because blockages could cause a backflow of water into ceiling spaces.

The SES received more than 4000 calls from across the state on Christmas Day.

Mayor Jim Cusack said local roads were damaged and five manhole covers needed to be replaced.

“There has also been a significant amount of silt and debris washed into drainage systems, as well as fallen tree branches obstructing roads and pathways,” Cr Cusack said.

It will cost about $30,000 to repair and clean drainage systems.

The Avondale Heights Library and Learning Centre had some minor roof tile damage and flooding in the computer room.

North Melbourne’s Lost Dogs Home was inundated with 124 lost animals from the northern and western suburbs ending up at the shelter after the storm.

Operations general manager Sue Conroy urged people to check the shelter after only half the pets had been reunited with their owners by the middle of last week.

“Don’t sit at home waiting for a phone call, actively seek out your dogs or cats,” Ms Conroy said.

The Temperance Township Estate in Ascot Vale, bounded by Union, Maribyrnong and Epsom Roads, was established with a caveat on each title preventing the distilling, brewing, or the serving of alcoholic beverages, but hotels were soon built at the outside corners of the settlement. And Whiskey Hill -the hill near the Showgrounds was so named as distilling of liquor was a popular pastime there.

McLeod Real Estate Professionals Ascot Vale

“Professionals” are recognized nationally as one of the top 3 Real Estate Agencies .

Directors Cath McLeod and Darren McLeod have been successfully operating McLeod Real Estate “Professionals” Ascot Vale for several years now and are still growing!

They have built an enviable reputation for honesty & integrity in the community. Cath has been listing and selling in this area for over 22 years and Darren for the past several years, now specializing in Property Management growth. The agency has many established clients of whom a large number are repeat customers in both sales and rentals. The agency strives to build lasting relationships & they receive many referrals from their clients seeking assistance for friends & family.

They joined the “Professionals” group in 2007. Why?

“Because they have the best value brand, the training is exceptional and they have a large network of like minded agents throughout Australia, NZ & SE Asia with an inter-office referral system to assist buyers and sellers”.

They are also Diamond Partners to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

“Sadly Darren’s mother lost her fight with Breast Cancer so we are proud to be part of raising awareness and funds to help find a cure for this deadly disease that will affect one in eleven people. Professionals have now raised over $3 million for research through fund raising efforts and commission sharing. There is no government funding provided.

We also support local groups such as Men’s 9 Hole Golf Competition at Riverside (over 20 years) and recently Progress Kindergarten Fete Day.”

The agency is independently owned & operated.

In 2011 they acquired & merged the Sweeney Ascot Vale agency and staff to form a very formidable & experienced team and moved to the larger more modern premises at 125 Union Rd Ascot Vale. The office has a separate meeting room facility, several separate offices, an informal lounge waiting area, kitchenette and staff amenities.

The agency continually strives to improve the skills of its agents and is motivated to grow the agency into the “agent of choice” for residents because of the “outstanding results the team achieve for their clients”.

Recently our vendors of a property in Rothwell Street, Ascot Vale gained the distinction of achieving in 2011 what is believed to be the highest price ever paid for a residential home in Ascot Vale.

From June the two groups merged to become one of the largest single branch Real Estate offices in the Moonee Valley region. With experienced Sales Staff, a growing Property Management Department and an ASIC Credit Licence for Mortgage Broking they are set to do some ” serious business ” for their clients in the near future.

They now have a wonderful blend of experience and youthful enthusiasm to provide you, their clients, with the service you deserve and they want to provide.

Choosing the right agent and agency to market your property or help you to purchase or manage your investment property will grow your wealth.

For your “Professional” experience call now 93729680.

In recent years there has been a surge in
property investment throughout Australasia.
Rental properties in most major cities are
in demand and the opportunities for both
high returns on rentals, as well as continued
strength in housing property prices in the
medium to long term is excellent.
At the same time, there needs to be a
considered approach on how best to maximise
and manage your property investment.
There are many aspects to property
management that you’ll need to consider
including services offered, finding a tenant,
property condition and inspection reports,
security bond, periodic inspections, repairs
and outgoings, setting a fair rental price,
insurance, tax deductions and more.
The most important steps you need to take
are outlined in this booklet.
